Nicholas Gachassin, Jr. founded the Gachassin Law Firm in 1977. In 2020, he was honored by the Louisiana Bar Association and The Tulane Law School for having practiced law for 50 years. In 1963 Nicholas graduated from Catholic High School in New Iberia, Louisiana then went on to the University of Southwestern Louisiana, now University of Louisiana, and graduated in 1967. In 1970 he graduated from The Tulane Law School. From 2004 to 2008 Nicholas served as First Assistant Attorney General for the State of Louisiana. After Hurricane Katrina, he worked closely with Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco in legal and political matters involved in the recovery from the storm.

His general practice involves healthcare matters. Nicholas has been a trial attorney defending healthcare providers throughout the State of Louisiana in medical malpractice claims, hospital and nursing home claims, and a variety of general liability claims related to various types of healthcare providers.

Nicholas is active in the community and is a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association, Lafayette Parish Bar Association, Ragin Cajun Athletic Foundation, and the Board of Trustees of Episcopal School of Acadiana.

He was born and raised in New Iberia, Louisiana. He’s been married to Johnnie Leah Click Gachassin for over 50 years. She was a practicing psychotherapist for over twenty years before retiring in 2018. Together, Johnnie and Nick have three sons, Nick Gachassin, III, Dr. Philip Gachassin, and Greg Gachassin. Nick III is now the Executive Counsel for the Louisiana Department of Health. Philip is a practicing general and bariatric surgeon in Lafayette, Louisiana. Greg is the owner of construction and real estate entities.

The Gachassins enjoy hunting, fishing, and traveling together. In 2016, to celebrate Nicholas and Johnnie’s 50th wedding anniversary, the entire family all traveled together to Hawaii.
